Using Yahoo Groups to Help Manage Aircraft
Maj Mario Accardo of MI Wing has created a Yahoo Group to help manage the CAP airplane assigned to his squadron. Check it out at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CPF2020/
This user group for N98219 does several things, there is 20 GB of data storage, just enough to store the aircraft POH (it's an old one), STC and the contents of the aircraft binder. This enables pilots to answer questions without going out to the airplane. Another feature is to post images of the cockpit for familiarization.
The real benefit though, is the communication among pilots. Every quarter, Maj Accardo lets the pilots know the break down of utilization hours by Mission Symbol, encourage them to fly more proficiency flights and update them on the aircraft or hanger status.
Members of wing staff use yahoo groups for their squadrons, aircrews and staffs, as well.
Mission Aircrew OPLAN
Maj Mario Accardo of MI Wing has created a Missions Aircrew Operations Plan to facilitate and execute a Flight Clinic for Aircrews.
It's flexible and scalable, and planners can add aircraft and expand the schedule. It address many facets of running the exercise and provides several tables to keep resources and students organized. All of the information from the SQTR are also included, as well as the Tasks completion requirements.

ES Call Roster with spouse/parent names
Captain Rick Crepas, Commander of the Kellogg Field Senior Squadron, MI Wing, has brought a practice he has done with his private corporation to Civil Air Patrol when he took on the duties of alerting officer for his unit. Capt. Crepas had decided that having to call a member at 2:30 in the morning to go on the mission and waking up their significant other sometimes upset this person, and showed him as being cold and impersonal. He now has the member’s significant others’ name on the recall list as well, so that if they answer the phone, he can call them by name, and honestly apologize to them as a person, for disturbing them.
This getting to know the member’s families has really increased the support to the member by the significant other as well as their support to the CAP mission. Getting to know your member as well as their family also shows that you do care about the member and understand their needs, to a point, making them more comfortable as part of the CAP family. When you are calling a member at home, it is sometimes difficult to remember their spouse's/significant other's name, so having this information on your recall list makes all the difference in the world on how you are preceived.
I mentioned this to the commander of the unit I am a volunteer with and he jumped on it. So we do this with just not the significant other…but we have the parent’s names as well for our cadet members. It has honestly made things whole lot more friendly and personable. So I know this idea works.

Chris Storey of CA Wing has developed a GES “quick-start guide” for members of his squadron to help them obtain their GES rating. The quick-start guide is part of their formal GES classroom sessions and guides the member through the online testing process. While the quick-start guide uses the California Wing web page as a starting point for locating the GES study materials and online testing, this can easily be changed for use in other wings.

Kirk Thirtyacre in IL Wing, put together a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of all of the Emergency Services Ground Team and Mission Radio Operator tasks to track member training. You can download the file here:

IDWg, Aug 04: Created a unique Excel application that provides mission managers with a mission’s real-time, accurate financial status at any point during the mission. This application has a CAPF 108 for each aircraft and vehicle, that can be updated as the respective vehicle or aircraft completes sorties. The total expenses from all of the CAPFs 108 automatically update a master summary sheet. For further information, contact IDWg at (208) 422-5251 or 529-2393.
UTWg, May 03: ES developed an outstanding, user-friendly ES Training Guide CD that provides checklists for new members with a step-by-step process to upgrade from General ES through scanner and observer to mission pilot. For further information, contact UTWg at (801) 533-5456 or (DSN) 924-4022.
FLWg, Nov 01: All FLWG Alerting Officers (AO) have Nextel phones which provide e-mail, paging, telephone and radio capabilities. Alerts from AFRCC are sent to all AOs simultaneously. An AO serves as the primary AO on a weekly rotating basis. The system is especially successful due to its redundancy. If the primary AO doesn’t respond in a timely manner, the system automatically alerts again after ten minutes. Any of the other AOs are authorized upon receipt of the second alert. For further information, contact FLWg at (813) 828-4300, (DSN) 968-4300 or flwghq@macdill.af.mil.
