Coverage of Civil Air Patrol’s role in the Gulf Coast old spill response will air today at 6 p.m. CDT (7 EDT) on WALB-TV, Channel 10, Albany, Ga. Logon to www.walb.com to view the broadcast live. CAP’s contributions to the oil spill response are impressive. As of July 13, 217 members had devoted a total of 60 days and more than 10,000 man-hours, and our aircrews had flown 467 sorties with a total of over 1,000 flight hours. These aircrews are transporting vital mission equipment, collecting data and flying coastline photo surveillance missions. The most important daily task CAP performs is flying about 700 miles of coastline from Louisiana to Florida and taking digital images of the oil containment barriers and adjacent land area on the coast. Thousands of digital images taken by our aircrews provide a panoramic view of the coastlines, which is helping other agencies respond to the crisis. Additional coverage is provided in the July-Sept. issue of Civil Air Patrol Volunteer, which will be mailed within the next two weeks. Also, extensive coverage will be presented in the Oct.-Dec. issue of the magazine.
