Learn to Lead: Curriculum Guide

To help senior members and cadet officers see the whole forest that is cadet leadership education, we’re publishing a Curriculum Guide for the upcoming Learn to Lead textbooks that launch this spring.

The main idea behind the Curriculum Guide is to explain how four different arenas -- academics, activities, Air Force traditions, and staff service -- work together to transform cadets into leaders. To put it another way, leadership education is not merely studying a textbook, or merely drilling a flight, but an integrated curriculum.

Leadership officers, DCCs, and others need to understand how CAP makes use of those four approaches in teaching leadership. Does this Curriculum Guide meet that need? Please sound off below and let us know.

421941 Capt. Carol Hearns How do I order these books? I could really put them to good use ASAP.This is one of the better ideas. I think that it is going to be a big help to us all. [Please see capmembers.com/learntolead for details. -curt]

This is very interesting! I have come to similar conclusions as you on how cadets (and their parents) are looking for this information. As DCC I found recently that our meetings are pretty boring and a statistic from the Boy Scouting program's leadership commission that the #1 reason youth quit programs is because they are bored. We tried the Cadet Great Start Program last year and it had great ideas, but our implementing the program itself was rough and we had to ditch the program about 2/3 of the way through it. We decided that we would use some of the topics from it, but not try to impliment the program as it is set up. I borrowed the COS binder from one of our older cadets and was overwhelmed with the amount of information in it. I felt much of it was just too much information for cadets to digest at the squadron level. The other challenge is that our Phase II cadets and higher are really getting tired of hearing presentations on Leadership I. So, we have been working on appropriate content for each phase. I am interested to see what this new L2L program involves. I guess if I had to pick a concern, it would be that in many programs I have read there is too much stress on the science and not so much on the art and imagination of leadership. It sounds like this program addresses this and provides some activities we can do during squadron meetings. I can't wait to read the entire program.

When will we have a price on the new cadet books that go with the new online testing? Vanguard still isnt listing a price. [We're negotiating retail price and/or print-on-demand pricing now. Please stay tuned -curt ]

Curt LaFond, your volenters and staff are making a giant step forward in Cadet Training by going on line with testing. Distance learning and testing has made it possible for our Air Force personel to go to school from any where they are stationed. You have given the CAP Cadets the tools that the Air Force is using. This puts them on a path to an education that is both self paced and self rewarding and affordable. Great job well done!! This can only get better as we get smarter in our efforts to educate our CAP cadets.

Outstanding! I truly applaud the efforts of the NHQ CP staff in providing the leaders of the cadet program, both cadet and senior, with the tools they need to truly assist and mentor our cadets to succeed in the program. Thank you!!!
